Here is Tony Robbin’s definition of success: Success is doing what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want as much as you want.
Tony Robbins isn’t a bad place to look for advice if you’ve recently made a decision to make yourself better by following good advice.
Let’s unpack Tony’s quote.
I’m then going to write out how this applies to me so I can be humiliated in a public forum if I fail to follow Tony’s advice, as I am ostensibly running a blog about following good advice. Then I’d like you to think about how this applies to you.
Here are the 5 points in the statement. Success is:
- WHAT YOU WANT
- WHEN YOU WANT
- WHERE YOU WANT
- WITH WHOM YOU WANT
- AS MUCH AS YOU WANT
Let’s break this down more…
1-WHAT YOU WANT
This is actually the hardest thing to figure out from the 5 points. Just ask somebody the question: “What do you want?”
99% of the time the answer will be: “Ohhhh, I don’t know…good job, nice vacation, some family time?”
This is my hypothesis: Most people *think* they know what they want but actually have NO IDEA what they REALLY want.
You have to know what you want!
And it doesn’t matter if others approve or not!
So, open a word processor. Get a pen and paper. Think about it. Write about it. Figure out what you want.
You will be aimless if you don’t do this!
2-WHEN YOU WANT
The litmus test for this is if you can do the “what you want” on a Tuesday.
If you can do whatever you want on Tuesday you have achieved true freedom. And let’s be honest–all we want is freedom to do whatever we want on a Tuesday!
Do you want to go to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay…on a Tuesday? (I love Busch Gardens, FYI). If you can, you are on the path to success!
What if you want to take 3 weeks of vacation in a row? If you achieve the success outlined by Tony Robbins you will be able to do this!
The key here is freedom of time.
If you don’t have freedom of time you will never have the success that you want. You can try to fool yourself that you love working in an office on Tuesday, but we all know that would be a lie!
3-WHERE YOU WANT
Freedom of location is a HUGE element of success.
Are you living where you want?
The country, state, city, and house? Whether that is on a sandy Florida beach or skiing down a cold Colorado slope.
I, for one, have zero desire to live anywhere else in the world other than my home state of Florida. I LOVE FLORIDA. Do you feel the same about where you live? But I still love the ability to travel all over the world while having the home base of Florida.
4-WITH WHOM YOU WANT
What is success and freedom worth if you can’t enjoy it with the right people?
If you are a family man (or woman), obviously, you want to enjoy life with your family!
How amazing would it be to take a 3 month trip to Southeast Asia with your wife and kids? That’s the dream! And how cool would it be if we built a community of free families that take trips around the world together??? (That’s one of the goals I have in building this blog).
All I want to do is be able to go on adventures with my family. How about you?
5-AS MUCH AS YOU WANT
This last point is pretty self-explanatory.
Success is designing your life so that you can do what you want as much as you want, whether that is time with family, traveling the world, writing a book, or even binging on Netflix if that is what you want to do.
I’m the kinda guy that goes “all in” on something…until I get enough. And then I move onto my next interest. I wanna have the freedom to do that as much as I want. You too? I bet!
Now Let’s Put Myself On Blast. Austin’s Answers To The Questions:
What I Want: Build an online writing/blogging business that provides tremendous value to families so we can all earn family freedom together.
When I Want: I want to be able to go to theme parks, state parks, and beaches on a Tuesday morning. I want to be able to go on “once in a lifetime” adventures.
Where I Want: I want my home base to be in Florida and I want to travel across the nation and across the world when the spirit moves me.
With Whom I Want: With my wife and kids. And with other free families.
As Much As I Want: I want to travel to all 175 FL state parks and travel to all 429 national parks. And then other adventures, and I want to live each adventure to the fullest!
Understanding Tony Robbin’s definition of success is a good starting point and deciding to follow his advice will only add good things to your life because the guy is a legend in helping people reach their potential.
To dig further into Toni Robbin’s philosophy on personal development, I recommend the following:
Awaken The Giant Within – This is Tony’s first book and is still as relevant today as it was when he first penned it 20+ years ago. In it is a step-by-step program that teaches you to take control of your life.
MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom – This is one of the best personal finance books that I have ever read, and it is a THICK book that digs deep into specific financial advice, instead of the surface, general advice found in most money books. Tony interviewed super-duper successful money managers for this book so that we may learn from them.
Unleash The Power Within – This can only be had in audio form and for good reason. This is a recording of his Unleash The Power Within seminar and it is my favorite Tony Robbins material. It also gives you access to one of his seminars without paying the arm and a leg ticket price.
Thanks for reading! Let’s get free together!
