Y’know how people sometimes make lists and such to amuse themselves? That’s what this is. I’m a big Stephen King fan and this is my list. It’s a list of his books and which ones were turned into movies and which ones I read. I aim to read them all.
Can a guy claim to be a big Stephen King fan without having read all the books? I don’t know, but I am writing a big long article about his books instead of going to bed and now I’ll be at work tomorrow morning with lack of sleep and bloodshot eyes, that’s gotta count for something, right?
Let’s get started:
Carrie (1974)
Book: King’s first novel and the one that set him free from teaching high school English at Hampden Academy once the paperback rights were sold, the rest is history. The book features a high school loser who has telekinetic powers. Carrie is a familiar story to even non-King fans.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, four times. The first Carrie movie was made 1976 and helped sell a lot of books. The second was called The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999). Third (2002) was made-for-TV and served as a backdoor pilot for a TV show that never materialized. Then a fourth Carrie (2013) was made. There was also a musical which bombed. Amazon is currently looking at reviving Carrie for a TV show.
Have I Read It? Yes
‘Salem’s Lot (1975)
Book: A reimagining of the Dracula story in modern day Maine, in a city called Jerusalem’s Lot.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, four times by my count. A 1979 TV mini-series was first, three hours long (shortened to 2 hours for a limited theater run). A sequel Return To ‘Salem’s Lot (1987). TNT made another 3-hour mini-series TV adaptation in 2004. The fourth was made by WB and released in 2024. Apparently there is a TV show called Chapelwaite loosely based on a King short story that takes place in the same town.
Have I Read It? No
The Shining (1977)
Book: “Heeere’s Johnny!” is a line that never appeared in the book, yet the book and movie are intricately linked in pop culture, sorry Steve (he didn’t care for the famous adaptation). This book, featuring an alcoholic writer and his family caretaking the haunted and isolated Overlook Hotel during off-season (what could go wrong?), cemented King as a popular writer.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, of course (1980). I remember being terrified as a kid watching Jack Nicholson chase his family around the hotel with an ax during a late night movie presentation on old fashioned analog antenna TV, sadly an experience my own children will never have (staying up late and watching scary movies on programmable TV without parents knowing, not being chased around a hotel by their crazy father with an ax).
Have I Read It? Yes, and I still have the paperback I bought from Border’s Books many moons ago.
Rage (1977)
Book: A psychological thriller about a maladjusted student and his school shooting. This book was written before school shootings was a really a thing. King let the book go out of print. At least six perpetrators of school shootings were partially inspired by the novel. “Now out of print, and a good thing.”
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? Yes, it was included in an old paperback of The Bachman Books I have, a collection of five books King wrote under the alias of Richard Bachman. Rage has since been removed from the collection.
The Stand (1978)
Book: The final version of this novel clocks in at 1,152 pages and is widely regarded as King’s best. A superflu kills off almost the entire human population except for a very small number of immune people, they navigate the post-apocalyptic world and also have to contend with the rising of a Dark Lord, a drifter by the name of “The Walking Dude” (AKA Randall Flagg).
Made Into A Movie? No, but two miniserieses have been made, one in 1994 and the other in 2020. Neither of them were particularly good. There are rumors of a movie in development. The only way to properly bring The Stand to the screen is with a big budget and multiple movies or a high-quality miniseries, IMAO.
Have I Read It? Yes, and make sure to read the Complete and Uncut Edition.
Night Shift (1978)
Book: The first of twelve Stephen King short story collections. Twenty stories grace the pages of this collection, the most famous being Children of the Corn.
Made Into A Movie? Uh, yes. Children of the Corn (1984), Cat’s Eye (1985), Maximum Overdrive (1986), Graveyard Shift (1990), The Mangler (1995), The Boogeyman (2023). Then made for TV: Sometimes They Come Back (1991), Trucks (1997), Battleground (2006), Children of the Corn (2009), Gray Matter (2019), Chapelwaite (2021).
Have I Read It? No
The Long Walk (1979)
Book: In a dystopian future, 100 teenagers compete in a walking contest to win a big prize. One winner, the rest shot dead. It’s actually the first novel King wrote. He wrote it as a college freshman. It’s a Bachman book.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, 2025.
Have I Read It? Yes
The Dead Zone (1979)
Book: Johnny Smith awakes from a coma and finds he has brain damage, the “Dead Zone” but he also awakes with some new super powers. The first book to feature King’s fictional town, Castle Rock.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 1983 and included Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen. Also, a 2002 TV show.
Have I Read It? No
Firestarter (1980)
Book: A father and daughter story that includes the ability to summon fire, and when I first read the book I went, meh, but as time goes by my thoughts keep returning to it. Maybe because I’m a father of three daughters.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 1984 with Drew Barrymore and Martin Sheen again (playing a different character from The Dead Zone). Made again in 2022. A miniseries from 2002, Firestarter: Rekindled.
Have I Read It? Yes
Roadwork (1981)
Book: Another Bachman book. A man with nothing left to live for finds out his house and place of work are flagged for demolition to make way for a highway extension.
Made Into A Movie? No, not yet.
Have I Read It? Yes, in my Bachman Books collection.
Cujo (1981)
Book: A Saint Bernard gets rabies and goes on a killing spree.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 1983 and the movie had a better ending than the book, I think. The book was rather fun but the ending was dark, even for a King novel. Netflix says they are making a new version of it.
Have I Read It? Yes
Danse Macabre (1981)
Book: A non-fiction book discussing his approach to horror, basically an FAQ for people who were always asking King the same questions about where he gets his ideas and his approach.
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? No
The Running Man (1982)
Book: Another Bachman book and another dystopian future game show set in the far off distant year of 2025! I like to think Running Man and The Long Walk take place in the same universe.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, two times. Once (1987) with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a movie that looked nothing like the book (but was still kinda fun, tbh). The second time was very recently with Glen Powell, who seems to be on a quest to remake all the most popular action movies from his childhood.
Have I Read It? Yes, and it was fun.
The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger (1982)
Book: The first of eight novels that make up The Dark Tower series (there is also a novella and a “children’s” book). The Dark Tower series is must read for King fans as it is the work that pulls all of his other works together under one umbrella.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, and the film The Dark Tower (2017) is actually a sequel to all of the books.
Have I Read It? Yes
Buy The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger on Amazon
Different Seasons (1982)
Book: Four novellas, each representing a different season of the year. Notable because three of the stories were turned into massively successful movies.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, this book spun out three movies–The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Apt Pupil (1998), and Stand By Me (1986).
Have I Read It? Yes

Christine (1983)
Book: A dilapidated 1958 Plymouth Fury “Christine” with a bad attitude comes into the possession of a teenager.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, the same year the book came out. Rumors are flying as to a possible remake.
Have I Read It? Yes
Pet Sematary (1983)
Book: I haven’t read the book nor seen the movie, but my understanding is this one is scary as heck. Something about dead pets coming back to life.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, four times–Pet Sematary (1989) and direct sequel Pet Sematary Two (1992), and a remake in 2019 and a prequel, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, in 2023.
Have I Read It? No
Cycle Of The Werewolf (1983)
Book: The shortest King novel, technically a novella, tells the story of a werewolf who terrorizes a small town.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, the movie is called Silver Bullet (1985)
Have I Read It? No, but it would be a good place to start in my quest to read every King book.
Buy Cycle of the Werewolf on Amazon
The Talisman (1984)
Book: Co-written with his pal, Peter Straub, this novel features a 12 year old protagonist trying to save the life of his mother by flipping back and forth from our world and a parallel dimension.
Made Into A Movie? No, and not for lack of trying. A movie version was cancelled, then it was gonna be a Netflix series, but that fell apart too in December 2025.
Have I Read It? Yes, I enjoyed it.
The Eyes Of The Dragon (1984)
Book: A departure from his horror novels, The Eyes of the Dragon is a straight up, traditional fantasy novel. Many fans did not like it, but it is interesting that it is tied closely to The Dark Tower epic.
Made Into A Movie? No, and it was a close thing in the early 2000s that it was gonna be made into an animated film with a $45 million budget. It would have been a sight to see! There was talk of Hulu making something from it, but that was a dead end too.
Have I Read It? Yes, and I enjoyed it. Not sure why the King fans pushed back on it so hard, my guess is that, years later, it is a beloved book in the official canon.
Buy The Eyes of the Dragon on Amazon
Thinner (1984)
Book: The final book written as Richard Bachman, he was outed by a bookstore clerk who was a fan of both authors and suspected they were one and the same; he was able to confirm it by tracking down the copyright to the Bachman Books via the Library of Congress. Sales exploded.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 1996. It didn’t do very well.
Have I Read It? No
Skeleton Crew (1985)
Book: The third collection of King short stories. This collection includes 23 stories. The only story that jumped at me as “big deal” was The Mist.
Made Into A Movie? Oh boy…Hollywood sure does love these short story collections: Creepshow 2 (1987), Word Processor of the Gods was included as an episode Tales From The Darkside (1984), Gramma was an episode of The Twilight Zone (1985), The Revelations of ‘Becka Paulson was an episode of Outer Limits. Survivor Type was an episode for Creepshow. Two feature length films The Mist (2007) and The Monkey (2025).
Have I Read It? No
IT (1986)
Book: A 1,000+ page book that features King’s best known villain: Pennywise the Dancing Clown. This sprawling work covers a lot of ground, including sewers.
Made Into A Movie? Count me among the children of the 90s traumatized by the made-for-TV version of IT (1990), featuring Tim Curry as the demonic clown. The film was remade as It (2017) and It: Chapter 2 (2019). A series, It: Welcome To Derry, was released in 2025.
Have I Read “IT”? Yes, yes I have.
The Dark Tower II: The Drawing Of The Three
Book: Book 2 in King’s Magnus Opus, The Dark Tower series. What’s to say? The adventurous adventure continues!
Made Into A Movie? As previously mentioned, there’s a 2017 Dark Tower movie that is a continuation of the books.
Have I Read It? Yes
Buy The Drawing Of The Three on Amazon
Misery (1987)
Book: Slated to be a Richard Bachman release before his cover was blown, King wrote this in response to the fan rejection of The Eyes Of The Dragon. Romance writer, Paul Sheldon, is held captive by his #1 fan and forced to write a new novel, reviving his famous character he killed off.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, and a very good movie (1990) at that in which a relatively unknown Kathy Bates won an Academy Award for best actress. There were also a couple stage adaptations.
Have I Read It? Yes, and it’s a goodie.
The Tommyknockers (1987)
Book: “An awful book,” King says, well, then I must have awful taste because I liked it. An object buried in the woods gives the townspeople strange powers, kinda a foray into science fiction, but not really.
Made Into A Movie? No, but it spawned a 1993 TV miniseries that King didn’t like. I haven’t seen it, so I just don’t know.
Have I Read It? Yes
Buy The Tommyknockers on Amazon
Nightmares In The Sky (1988)
Book: I guess this is a Stephen King book, it’s a coffee table book with photos of gargoyles by Richard Minissali and King wrote the text. King’s second non-fiction book.
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? No
Buy Nightmares in the Sky on Amazon
The Dark Half (1989)
Book: A homage to his alter ego, Richard Bachman, this is a book about a writer who wrote very successful novels under an alias and was outed; he put on a mock burial for the alias, “Not a very nice guy.” But the alias wasn’t ready to die…
Made Into A Movie? Yes (1993).
Have I Read It? Yes
Four Past Midnight (1990)
Book: Well, look at that we made it to the 90s! Four Past Midnight contains four novellas–The Langoliers; Secret Window, Secret Garden; The Library Policeman; and The Sun Dog.
Made Into A Movie? Langoliers was made into a two-part made-for-TV film (1994) and Johnny Depp starred in Secret Window (2004).

Book: Husband Gerald handcuffs wife Jessie to the bed in a secluded cabin to play a weird sex game, Gerald has a heart attack and dies and Jessie is still handcuffed to the bed. Oh oh!
Made Into A Movie? Yes, made Into a 2017 Netflix movie.

Dolores Claiborne (1992)
Book: A companion novel, of sorts, to Gerald’s Game. For the best King reading experience, try reading them back-to-back. A murder story.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, Kathy Bates is back again for another King movie. This one was released in 1995.

Insomnia (1994)
Book: A widower named Ralph can’t sleep and starts seeing magic. This book is connected with The Dark Tower series and there are a nod or two toward IT.
Made Into A Movie? While there is a movie called Insomnia, it has nothing to do with this book. So, no.
Have I Read It? No
Rose Madder (1995)
Book: A novel about domestic violence and Greek Mythology, a departure for a typical King novel with all the Greek stuff.
Made Into A Movie? No, HBO took a look at it but didn’t do anything with it.
Have I Read It? Yes, and I can recommend the audiobook, which features King and Blair Brown trading off chapters based on character POV.
The Green Mile (1996)
Book: Inmate on death row, John Coffey, displays unexpected abilities. Interesting in that this novel was serialized first before being compiled together in a complete volume.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, I’m old enough to remember when this movie came out (1999) and it was a big deal and a tear jerker.
Have I Read It? No, but it’s high on my list of King books to read.

Book: A group of travelers get stuck in the old mining town of Desperation in Nevada by a deranged deputy, and it turns out ancient evil is at play.

Have I Read It? Yes, and it has a “mirror” novel released at the same time…
The Regulators (1996)
Book: A “mirror novel” to Desperation and also released under King’s pseudonym of Richard Bachman, although at this point everybody knew Bachman and King were one and the same.

Hearts In Atlantis (1999)
Book: Another collection of three novellas and two short stories.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, made Into the 2001 film with Anthony Hopkins.
Have I Read It? No, and for some reason this book has always called to me and I haven’t gotten around to reading it. I have greatly enjoyed every short story collection of King’s that I have read; it could be argued that, although King is and will always be best remembered for his novels, that his short stories are him at his best.

On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft (2000)
Book: A departure for King, this is part biography, part writing manual for those who want to learn to write a bit better, or even publish their own novels and short stories (I would also add this is a good read for bloggers).
Made Into A Movie? No, but I’m sure there will someday be a biopic on King’s life and this material will be used in the film.
Have I Read It? Yes, and a must read for any writer or aspiring writer.
Secret Windows: Essays And Fiction On The Craft Of Writing (2000)
Book: I’m not sure if this is a “true” Stephen King book, it feels a lot like those lame cobble together Hemingway “books” released forty years after his death, containing previously released essays and excerpts of short stories on a particular subject: “Hemingway on Fishing,” “Hemingway on Hunting,” “Hemingway on Drinking A Ton Of Whiskey” etc. Undoubtedly, this book will need to be included in the collection of any King completionists, I’m not judging. It was a “Book-Of-The-Month-Club” selection.
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? No
Dreamcatcher (2001)
Book: Four friends go on a hunting trip that turns awry as they have to contend with an alien invasion.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 2003 and it bombed.

Book: Black House is the sequel to The Talisman, and again, this is co-authored with Peter Straub. This time the book is set in Wisconsin.
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? No, but I borrowed it from the library once.
From A Buick 8 (2002)
Book: The second King book to center around a demon car, but this car seems to act more as a conduit rather than being straight up possessed.
Made Into A Movie? Not yet, but a few people have tried and eventually somebody will probably get it done.
Have I Read It? Yes, this book was released when I was in high school and it is at this point I begin to have memories, or rather, awareness of new Stephen King novels being released.

Everything’s Eventual (2002)
Book: 11 short stories and 3 novellas. It makes my head spin by how many stories King can consistently pump out each year.

Lisey’s Story (2006)
Book: A widow of a famous novelist slowly goes through her husbands things and relives memories. King states this is his favorite book that he has written. The genesis was when he was in the hospital and during that time his wife resigned his writing studio, when he returned the project was half done, his books were packed away, and he realized it’s what his studio would like like after he died.
Made Into A Movie? It was made Into an 8 part miniseries on Apple TV+.

Have I Read It? Yes
Just After Sunset (2008)
Book: Another collection of short stories, the fifth one, 13 stories this time. Strangely, I have a vivid memory of King appearing on Conan O’Brien to promote this book.
Made Into A Movie? Not really, but there was an experimental “graphic video series” that had episodes of about 90 seconds, for a total runtime of about 30 minutes. I’ve never seen them so I don’t really understand what it is.
Have I Read It? I’ve read Gingerbread Girl and Stationary Bike, but not the others.

Duma King (2008)
Book: A man has a tragic accident and moves to a secluded Florida Gulf beach house to recover, there is an entity. One of my favorite King books, but of course I’m hopelessly biased since it’s set where I live and everybody wants King to set a novel in their backyard.
Made Into A Movie? No, but it should be.
Have I Read It? Absolutely, one of my favorites. Actually, it might be my favorite.
Under The Dome (2009)
Book: An invisible dome is somehow placed over a town and the townsfolk have to figure out what to do about it.
Made Into A Movie? It was made into three seasons of a TV show by the same name.
Have I Read It? No, this is a very, very big book. Years ago I got the audiobook CDs from the local library but I wasn’t able to make it through all of them. I’ll have to give it another shot, nowadays I just listen to audiobooks straight from my phone, that makes things easier.
Full Dark, No Stars (2010)
Book: The third collection of novellas, per usual, there are four here–1922, Big Driver, Fair Extension, A Good Marriage.

Doctor Sleep (2013)
Book: It’s the sequel to The Shining! The boy is all growed up and dealing with his own problems now.
Made Into A Movie? Yes, in 2019. It had the dubious task of being a move based on the book and as being a sequel to the famous movie version of The Shining.
Have I Read It? Yes, it was a worthy sequel, I guess, people seemed to have liked it. But it will never be The Shining.
Mr. Mercedes (2014)

Book: A collection of four short stories: Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Life Of Chuck, If It Bleeds, and Rat.
Made Into A Movie? Netflix did Mr. Harrigan’s Phone (2020). The Life of Chuck was turned into a movie and released in 2024. The other two novellas haven’t been made yet.

Later (2021)
Book: The third time King teamed up with Hard Case Crime on a novel, this time the main character can see ghosts. “I see dead people.”
Made Into A Movie? No
Have I Read It? Not yet, but this is high on the list. I’m a sucker for Hard Case Crime books.
Billy Summers (2021)
Book: Billy Summers is a hitman who only kills bad guys, he wants to retire but is offered one last lucrative contract.
Made Into A Movie? Not yet, but is sounds like pretty serious effort is underway to make it happen.

Gwendy’s Final Task (2022)
Book: The conclusion to the Gwendy Trilogy, once again King teams up with Richard Chizmar. For those reading closely, you may say “Hey, you didn’t list Book 2 of the trilogy.” That’s true. Because Richard Chizmar wrote that one alone. While book 1 was a novella, this is a full-on novel.

Fairy Tale (2022)
Book: A dark fantasy novel about a 17 year old leading the forces of good against evil. Is this a sequel to Wheel of Time?!! Probably not, but it’s the first book I thought of reading the Wikipedia description. (Okay, y’all caught me, I’ve been using Wikipedia as my source for this article).
Made Into A Movie? Not yet, but it sounds like some serious effort is underway.

Holly (2023)
Book: The novel follows Holly Gibney from the Bill Hodges Trilogy, The Outsider, and If It Bleeds. She’s a private investigator. What crazy crime will she get entangled with this time? (I don’t know, I haven’t read this one).

You Like It Darker (2024)
Book: A short story collection with 12 stories, plus a bonus story, The Music Room, was added to paperback and Kindle editions.
Made Into A Movie? Not yet, but usually King’s short story collections are good for a few movies and TV shows.

Never Flinch (2025)
Book: Holly Gibney is back again, by my count this is her sixth time out, quickly becoming a King Hallmark character.

Well, holey moley we made it. That’s a lot of books. I don’t feel like scrolling through to count them one-by-one, but Wikipedia tells me there are 65 novels and novellas!
I didn’t even include King’s screenplays, which is another facet of his incredible output of words. There are also two “children’s books” written by King. Also, I once saw a pretty sick pop-up version of the novel The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
Okay, I gotta go to work. Bye.
